For decades, science fiction has imagined a future in which we could walk through our memories inside using virtual reality. What once seemed futuristic is now almost effortless via an iPhone equipped with the Teleport app and a new technology it incorporates called Gaussian Splatting.
Some places go beyond being just locations: they become part of our identity. For me and countless others, Red Rocks Amphitheatre is one of those places – a legendary concert venue where I’ve shared some of the best nights of my life with my favorite people in the world. Reliving these locations in VR doesn’t just bring back memories, it pulls me into them, invoking the sights, sounds, and emotions that made those nights unforgettable thanks to the sense of presence that photos or videos could never alone trigger, but that is abundant within an interactive VR experience.
The idea of revisiting memories in VR isn’t new, but what’s revolutionary is how effortless and photorealistic it has become. With just a few minutes of casually walking through a space using the Teleport app, you can capture a fully detailed 3D scene, preserving everything from reflections to the finest textures thanks to the underlying Gaussian Splat technology. The best part? Anyone can create these scenes, no experience with 3D tools required.
Because it’s so effortless, anyone can capture a place that holds special meaning to them – no matter how small or obscure it may seem to others. Take the walkway leading into the Red Rocks Amphitheatre as an example. I vividly remember leaning over the railing for the first time as a teenager, completely awestruck by the natural beauty of Red Rocks, blissfully unaware of how profoundly this place would shape me. Now, years later, I can carry this seemingly insignificant space with me wherever I go, stepping back into that same moment of excitement—right down to leaning over the rail, just as I did back then. And each time I revisit it, I discover something new about the space, unlocking forgotten memories and sometimes discovering something new about myself.
I challenge you to capture a place that holds deep meaning for you & sparks memories, emotions, or a sense of connection. The act of capturing a space transforms your relationship with it, uncovering hidden details you might have overlooked. Once you capture a space, it becomes yours forever, preserved in stunning detail, ready to be revisited anytime, anywhere.
